Yves Saint Laurent Sac du Jour Bags Large

About Yves Saint Laurent Sac du Jour Bags

As Hedi Slimane's very first bag after his takeover of Saint Laurent Paris, the Sac du Jour had a lot to live up to. Thanks to a coterie of loyal celebrity clientele, however, the structured, briefcase-inspired satchel became an instant hit. Taking inspiration from Slimane's blend of rock and roll and polished Parisian chic, the Sac du Jour was released in a bevvy of sizes and colors, including limited-edition releases. Current creative director Anthony Vacarello releases new iterations, too, so this style's enduring popularity isn't going anywhere. Deceptively roomy, the SdJ fits everything for work and play alike, adding a dose of cool to any outfit. Hedi wouldn't have it any other way.

About the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Bag

First released in 2013 during Hedi Slimane’s tenure as creative director, the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour has become one of the brand’s most iconic and representative collections. Since its debut, the line expanded to include backpacks, briefcases and duffle bags, though the foundational collection of structural styles sits at the core of every new launch. Sac de Jour translates to “bag of the day,” a fitting description for a bag meant to take you from day to night with absolute elegance through minimalist design.

Design and Features of the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Bag

The Sac de Jour line offers several different sizes and styles, but all share the common threads of sleek lines and understated sophistication. Every bag in the collection has “Saint Laurent Paris” embossed on the front, often with a metallic foil. The interior is either lined in grosgrain or suede, and leather or metal feet protect the bottom of each bag.

The classic Sac de Jour bags come in several variations, some of which include a removable, adjustable leather shoulder strap in addition to the tubular top handles. The gusseted, accordion-style sides are secured by a compression strap with front button tabs. Attached to the handle is a removable, leather-encased padlock with a key that snaps inside the bag for storage. The details and dimensions are as follows (width x height x depth):

  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Nano: 8.6 x 7 x 4.1 inches
This classy little bag is ideal for those times when you only need to carry the essentials. Date night, anyone? The interior includes one main compartment. Its crossbody strap can be adjusted to have a strap drop from 20 to 24 inches. The top handle has a 2.5-inch strap drop.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Baby: 10.2 x 8 x 4.9 inches
A removable zippered pocket—perfect for cosmetics or other small items—divides the main compartment of the Sac de Jour Baby, a bag that can take you from day to night. The top handles have a 3.5-inch strap drop, while the crossbody strap drop can be adjusted from 20 to 23 inches.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Small: 12.5 x 10 x 6.1 inches
Don’t be fooled by the moniker. In fact, the “small” Sac de Jour is big enough to hold a tablet or small laptop and other day-to-day essentials of fashionistas on the go. Leave the zippered pouch in place to add organization, or remove it to create one large main compartment. The top handles have a 4-inch strap drop and the long shoulder strap drop is adjustable from 17 to 21 inches.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Large: 15.7 x 11.8 x 8.2 inches
The Sac de Jour Large also features a central removable zip pouch that divides the interior of the bag. Its top handles have a 3.75-inch strap drop and the adjustable shoulder strap has a 19-inch strap drop. If you have a lot to carry as you go through your day, this sizeable beauty is for you. Light packers: The Sac de Jour might even work as an overnight bag.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Thin Large: 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.3 inches
The Sac de Jour Thin has the same features as the Large bag but is about 3 inches less deep for a more streamlined profile—perfect for busy professionals who like an elegant look.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Carry All Bag: 15.7 x 12.2 x 7.8 inches
Similarly, the Sac de Jour Carry All bag resembles the Large and the Thin but with different dimensions. It also adds an interior zip pocket and two open interior pockets.
  • Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Souple: 15.7 x 11.8 x 8.2 inches
“Souple” means flexible in French, but the Souple’s supple structure doesn’t detract from its simple elegance. This bag has the same dimensions as the Large but offers an overall shape that’s less structured and slightly slouchier.

Materials and Craftsmanship of the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Bag
All of Saint Laurent’s handbags are made in Italy using the finest materials and assembled by expert craftsmen. The Sac de Jour most often comes in calfskin leather, but several other materials are available, including (but not limited to) lambskin, leather-lined canvas and ostrich leather. Finishing options—like smooth or grained leather, embossed animal skin, studded, embroidered, metallic, patent, suede, woven and quilted leather—add even more variety. And, as of 2021, Saint Laurent continued to introduce new colorways each season. With everything from classic black, beige and gray to silver, vibrant orange, electric blue and more, there’s a Sac de Jour color for every person and outfit.

The metal hardware on the bags is most often a gold tone, but silver, nickel, bronze and black are also used.

The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Bag’s Value and Collectibility

In general, an investment in a Saint Laurent bag is a solid bet—the brand is one of the top five luxury fashion labels with bags that hold their value over time (when well cared for, of course). Because this line has been around for a while, you’ll likely find many options on the resale market. In early 2021, pre-loved Sac de Jour Nano and Baby bags fetched around $1,100. The Sac de Jour Small sold for a few hundred dollars more, on average, while the large version of the bag went for roughly $1,700.
