Chevrolet Camaro Window Cranks and Parts

The Chevrolet Camaro has been one of Americas most enduring sports cars since the first Chevy Camaro rolled off the assembly line in 1966. While todays Camaros are equipped with power windows, many of the older models have window cranks. When Chevy Camaro drivers need replacement window cranks and parts, it’s easy to find compatible items.

Manual window cranks work via a system of cranks, gears, and pulleys. When the Chevy driver turns the crank, they are effectively acting as the motor, thus moving the window glass up and down. The cranks are attached to a cable that winds around a spool mechanism inside the vehicles door.

There have been many Chevy Camaro vehicles manufactured over the years, and the manual windows of a 1968 model will likely use different mechanisms than a 1998 model. Nonetheless, manual systems usually use the following components:

• Handle: The handle, or crank, provides the power needed to operate the window. Chevy Camaro drivers can find a range of handle styles, from basic black handles to shiny chrome handles.
• Regulator: This is the mechanism responsible for moving the glass up and down. There are several types used to operate manual mechanisms.

The manual windows of a Camaro may be equipped with the following types of regulating systems:

• Link winding: These use mechanical linkage to move glass. In these examples, a regulating device with teeth and a sliding arm use a scissor action to induce up-and-down motion.
• Cable and pulley: Some options use a cable-and-pulley system, which consists of a regulating device, drum, pulley, and clamps. A long cable runs through the system’s components, effectively pulling the window.
• Rack and pinion: Rack-and-pinion assemblies consist of a window-winder boss and a rack. The pinion engages with the rack, thus converting rotational motion into the linear motion needed to lift windows.

When Camaro drivers discover that their vehicles window cranks are malfunctioning, they may need to replace the entire window assembly, from the crank handle to the regulating mechanism. They should be sure to choose Camaro parts for the correct door; options are available for front/back and driver/passenger side. When choosing parts and accessories, there are two main options:

• Original equipment manufacturer (OEM): OEM Camaro parts are those manufactured by Chevy. When Chevy Camaro drivers find OEM parts designed specifically for their vehicles make and model, they can be sure that they’ll fit.
• Aftermarket: Aftermarket parts are not manufactured by Chevrolet but may still be compatible with Camaros. Indeed, if Chevy Camaro drivers only need to replace the window crank, rather than the entire mechanism, they should have little trouble finding a suitable aftermarket option.
