Chevrolet Tahoe Wheel Hubs and Bearings

The wheel hub and bearings are critical parts in providing your car or trailer with a smooth ride. Driving a motorcycle, car, or truck or pulling a trailer with worn or damaged wheel hubs and bearings may decrease your fuel economy.

What are wheel hubs and what are they made of?

The wheel hub connects the wheels to the vehicle or trailer. The hub is made of metal and has metal studs on the surface, to which the wheels attach. There are metallic bearings inside the hub which allow the wheel to spin freely around the spindle, and the wheel hub is attached to the brake rotor, allowing the brakes to slow the rotation of the wheels, bringing the vehicle or trailer to a halt. There is also grease inside the hub to facilitate the bearings moving freely within the hub.

What do freewheel hubs do?

Four-wheel-drive cars and trucks have a drive train attached to each axle, allowing the motor to provide driving power to all four wheels. A four-wheel-drive vehicle may have the ability to “unlock” the front axle from the drivetrain, allowing the wheels to turn freely around the spindle without providing driving force. When the drive hub is unlocked from the drivetrain, the hub is said to be “free-wheeling.”

What do manual-locking wheel hubs do?

Manual locking wheel hubs allow you to turn the four-wheel drive in your vehicle on and off by manually engaging the front wheels. This may require getting in and out of your vehicle each time you wish to engage or disengage four-wheel drive. You may or may not have a physical key required for you to lock or unlock your axle. Many cars and trucks have automatic locking wheel hubs, designed to engage and disengage as needed to optimize the driving experience.

When do wheel hubs require replacement?

Typically, the wheel hub itself does not go bad. The bearings may wear out over time, or debris may accumulate in and around the bearings or in the grease around the bearings, impeding the wheel’s ability to spin. These parts should be checked every 25,000-30,000 miles or per your manufacturers guidelines. You may also check the grease in your hubs when you rotate your tires, to verify the integrity of your hubs and bearings. You should also check your trailer hub and bearings each time before pulling your trailer.

What is a hub bearing and what does it do?

The wheel bearings allow the wheels to rotate around the axle or spindle. Many wheel bearings have anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensors included, which report how fast your wheels are spinning to your car’s computer. If braking force is needed, the ABS system will determine if anti-lock braking is needed based upon the data relayed by the ABS sensors.

Worn wheel bearings or an accumulation of debris in the grease around the bearings may impact your cars fuel economy. If you are towing a trailer, worn or damaged trailer wheel bearings will increase the drag from your trailer, negatively impacting your fuel economy.
