Motor Mounts for Chevrolet Malibu

During the course of your Chevrolet Malibu’s lifetime, it will experience the wear and tear of everyday driving, and you may need to replace some parts. If you have been noticing excessive noise or vibration in your Malibu lately, it might be time to replace the motor mounts in your car.

What are motor mounts?

Under the hood of your Chevrolet Malibu sedan, you’ll find that the motor mounts are the connecting hardware between your engine and the vehicle’s frame. The standard model is made from a solid piece of steel with a rubber sleeve sitting on top of it, though there are other models out there that utilize other materials, such as polyurethane. Your Chevrolet Malibu’s motor mounts help to reduce vibration and noise caused by the engine’s moving parts, keep the engine stable, and keep your vehicle’s drive-line in correct alignment.

What are the differences between OEM and aftermarket motor mounts?

When deciding on which motor mounts to purchase for your Chevrolet Malibu, a choice will have to be made between products from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or an aftermarket manufacturer. OEM motor mounts are made by Chevrolet and are designed specifically for the Malibu, while aftermarket motor mounts are produced by a third-party company and are mass-produced to fit a number of vehicle makes and models. That said, just because an aftermarket motor mount was not specifically designed for the Chevrolet Malibu doesn’t mean that it won’t work well or last as long. Also, there may be other options available in aftermarket mounts that do not exist in OEM versions. The best step to take in this situation is to shop and compare OEM and aftermarket motor mounts, and see which mount will work best for your needs.

How do you replace worn-out motor mounts on your Chevy?
  • First, check to make sure there is clearance between your Chevrolet Malibu’s engine and the frame. This includes any hoses or lines that might get caught or crimped when you lift the engine. Also, watch out for the distributor cap. Once clearance is assured, place the jack under the engine and lift it into place, and then use blocks of wood for stability. Make sure to avoid the cars oil pan.
  • Second, loosen the mounting bolts to release the engine from the frame of your Malibu sedan, and then crawl underneath and loosen all the mount-to-frame bolts.
  • Next, slowly jack up the engine until you can safely remove the motor mounts. Once removed, compare them to the new mounts to ensure they match.
  • Install the new motor mounts in your Chevrolet Malibu and thread in the mount-to-frame bolts before lowering the engine.
  • Finally, carefully lower the engine and tighten up all the bolts.
