Choosing New Woofers and Subwoofers for Your Audio System

Modern audio and sound systems may be complex, with a wide range of components, but they are an absolute must for anyone who loves their music. When they go together right, modern speaker systems (usually composed of at least woofers, subwoofers, mid-range speakers, and tweeters) can sound great. However, it can be quite hard to choose the right woofers and subwoofers (which are responsible for the deep bass sounds people love so much) for your system, especially if you aren't super technologically minded.

What Technical Features Should I Keep in Mind?

The features of JBL woofers and subwoofers can seem like another language when you first look at them. Since subwoofers and woofers are responsible for the deep bass sound of your music, you should consider the following technical features:

  • Their power - The power of speakers usually measures in watts. The more watts a subwoofer or woofer has, the louder the sound it is able to play will be. Speakers with more power are generally able to produce better bass sounds without breaking up. Make sure that you get the right powered speakers for the rest of your system.
  • Their driver size - In most cases, larger subwoofers and woofers (measured in mm or inchers) will be able to produce deeper bass sounds. Speakers with larger drivers, such as a 240 mm woofer, will usually be in bigger cases than those with smaller drivers, like a 160 mm subwoofer.
  • Do they have EQ? - EQ is a feature which can enhance the bass and other audio features of your speakers. In general, a subwoofer or woofer with EQ will sound better than the same speaker without, so it is important to keep this in mind.

What Should I Think about When Choosing New Woofers or Subwoofers?

As already noted, choosing JBL audio and sound system components like subwoofers, woofers, and amplifiers can be difficult. If you are looking for new speakers, then consider the following:

  • Your amplifier - It is extremely important to make sure that they rest of your sound system, from your tweeters to your subwoofers, are compatible with your amplifier. Different amplifiers have different technical features, so make sure that you keep this in mind.
  • How they are powered - The way that speakers are powered is an important consideration. Many plug directly into mains power, while others may be wireless and powered by rechargeable batteries.
