BMW 550i Grilles
BMW 550i Grilles are a synthetic barrier that allows air to pass through the BMW luxury sedan and the fan as you drive. They help cool the engine while protecting the vehicle from large particles and debris.
What purpose do grilles serve?Grilles, aside from aesthetically tying the BMW 5 Series sedan together, have a functional purpose. They block out large particles from damaging the radiator and the engine while still allowing air to flow through freely so the fan has access to cool, outside air. These grilles are split into two specially designed sections, left and right. The left is the forward-facing grille on the side of the drivers steering wheel of the BMW 5 Series.
Are the BMW grilles sold individually?The BMW grilles can be bought either as a set of two or individually, depending on the side that needs replacing. Different sources of grilles have slight variations in texture and tone, however. This is why buying and installing both grilles brand new and clean is sometimes the preferred option. If one of the grilles is still in good condition, you can order a single one for the opposite side. Painting or resurfacing the grilles is also an option to keep in mind if the tone of your replacement does not match well.
How are the grilles installed?The grilles are held in place by a small clamping system and a secondary bracket piece. Open the hood, then locate and disengage the clamps holding in the grilles on both sides. Push the grilles out of the front of the BMW xDrive sports sedan, and position the new in the same configuration. Push the grilles in through the front and attach them to the clamp. After pulling them evenly through, the clamps should make a "clicking" noise when properly fitted. Ensure that every clamp or bracket is securely fastened, otherwise the grilles could fall out while operating the vehicle.
Does driving without a grille pose a risk?It is always recommended to operate your BMW 5 series with a complete set of grilles. Although the vehicle will function without them, small pieces of gravel, rocks, metallic pieces, or sticks can enter through the cavity where the grille was located. If this happens, it could cause damage to your radiator or fan, possibly resulting in your BMWs engine possibly overheating or experiencing xDrive transmission issues. A complete set of grilles is an effective way to keep your BMW 5 Series running the way it was intended, while also completing the design of the BMW.
