How to Preserve Your Riding Range

When it comes to determining how far your motorcycle can go on a single tank of fuel, there are two things to consider: Capacity and consumption. The more gas you burn, the more you have to carry to travel the same distance.

When Should You Repair or Replace?

The biggest question when dealing with Yamaha R6 parts is when is it appropriate to repair the component as opposed to replacing it. The main factors to consider are damage and corrosion:

  • Damage: Damage is always an issue, a crumpled fuel tank will probably always be weaker where it needed repairs, so its a good idea to replace it. Small dents and punctures can repair without compromising the integrity of the tank.
  • Corrosion: External corrosion is one thing, but internal corrosion is far more dangerous. Your R6 gas tank can rot from the inside if you dont get a good handle on rust. Rust develops when there is moisture in the tank. Small amounts can sandblast out from the inside, but too much rust causes structural damage.

How Do You Replace a Fuel Tank?

The R6 stores fuel in a hump directly in front of the rider. Its clearly visible and easily accessible though there are a few things you may want to do before removing it.

  • Access: Remove the fairing from the bike so as to get better access to the gas tank, especially from the side. You also want to remove the seat.
  • Disconnect: Disconnect the fuel line and then drain the tank completely. You want to make sure there is absolutely no gasoline remaining in the tank before doing any work on its interior. You can use the fuel pump to clear out most of the gas, but dont run it dry as that can damage the pump.
  • Remove: Once the gas tank is empty, disconnect the electrical connections, and then remove the pump and locking cap. You will need these for the new tank.
  • Replace: Reattach the pump and locking cap; once thats done, hook up the electrical and fuel connectors and remount the unit. Do not lock your Yamaha R6 gas tank back into place until you have refilled it and checked for leaks.

Enjoying Your Ride

Anytime you need to replace parts on your YZF R6, the first things to consider are OEM parts. Designed specifically to work with your motorcycle, choosing OEM components means that you know that every part from o-rings, to the brake lever, and the fender meets the specifications for your ride. Aftermarket parts are an alternative, you simply have to be more careful to double check that they do meet your bikes specific requirements.
