Fuel Pumps for BMW 335i

Parts like fuel pumps sometimes need to be replaced due to regular wear and tear on BMW 335i cars. When fuel pumps begin to fail, it can impact your cars performance, so it’s best to replace them as needed. You can find the pump thats right for your repair project and learn more about them here.

What does a fuel pump do?

As the name implies, a cars fuel pump moves fuel from the fuel tank to the engines intake manifold or injectors. These pumps have been electric since the change to fuel injection systems. Fuel tank pumps also often are the mounts for plungers or float gauges that measure the amount of fuel in the tank.

What kinds of fuel pumps are there?

Fuel pumps come in a couple different types and some vehicles have parts both in them, so its important to know which one you need to replace when that’s the case.

  • High-pressure pumps: These pumps are found on or near the engine because it provides the pressurized fuel feed for the intake manifold or fuel injectors, which spray into the ignition chambers.
  • Fuel tank pumps: These pumps are usually mounted inside of a vehicles fuel tank and provide the initial pressure to draw fuel out of the tank and into the fuel line to the cars motor.
  • Mechanical pumps: These pumps are legacy technology that was used with carburetors, which were phased out of use when fuel injection replaced them. Mechanical fuel pumps were mounted near the carburetor, and they were cranked mechanically by the motor.
What are some common symptoms of a failing fuel pump?

Its sometimes difficult to diagnose a failing fuel pump because its symptoms mimic those of other parts of a cars motor like the ignition system. However, there are some telltale signs of a bad pump.

  • Whining noises: A failing fuel tank pump can make sucking or whining noises when its electric motor fails or it becomes clogged.
  • Difficult starts: A weak pump will sometimes take longer than normal to deliver fuel to the motor when you attempt to start your car. This causes it to take a couple seconds or longer of cranking to start the motor.
  • Engine does not start: There are many reasons an engine will refuse to start, but a bad fuel pump is one of them.
  • Rough running motor at highway speeds: When a high-pressure pump weakens, it will sometimes make itself known when you’re on the highway. This is because its at high speeds that the motors fuel demand is highest, and a weakened high-pressure pump will not be able to keep up. The result can be misfiring, shuddering, and stalling at high speeds.
