How do you reset the X5 service light indicator?

The BMW X5 includes a service light indicator so you know when to get an oil change. If you change your oil yourself, you will need to reset this light manually. The light will not reset if at least 10 liters of oil have not gone through the engine. So if you change your oil more frequently than recommended, you may not be able to reset your light. The following steps are for model years 2000-2012 that do not have a remote key.

  • Ensure the ignition key is off. Locate the trip odometer reset button. Press and hold this button while turning the key to the first position.
  • Press for five seconds. The words "inspection" or "reset" will appear. You will only be able to complete this task if the word "reset" appears. If "reset" does not appear, the minimum of 10 liters of oil consumption has not been reached.
  • Continue to press and hold the button. The word "reset" should begin flashing.
  • While its flashing, press the left button again briefly. An additional "reset" interval will pop up. If the words "end SIA" appear, the reset interval was successfully changed.
