Clutches and Parts for Nissan 240SX

The Nissan 240SX is a Japanese sports car that was introduced in North America in 1988 for the 1989 car model year. Even though the 240SX has been out of production for nearly 30 years, it is still being driven and also used in the niche sport of automobile drifting. Drifting is a sport that originated in Japan and involves oversteering a vehicle and "drifting" it into the corners of a specialized racetrack.

What causes the clutch to slip?

If you notice the clutch slipping, in most cases there is nothing to be too worried about. Depending on how you use your vehicle, this component will need to be maintained, have certain parts replaced, or be completely overhauled. These are some common reasons for the clutch to slip.

  • It has a worn-out disc.
  • The disc is covered in oil.
  • The clutch needs some adjustments.
  • The components are damaged due to extreme overheating.
What is included in a clutch kit?

If your clutch needs replacement parts, to be safe, its usually recommended to replace the entire clutch kit. This is because any parts you dont replace may have also suffered damage.

All the components in a complete clutch kit are designed to be fitted and aligned correctly. Standard clutch kits do not include the flywheel. Here are the parts that usually come with a kit.

  • The pressure plate, which is also called the cover-facing assembly.
  • The clutch plate, which is also known as the clutch disc.
  • The throw race. This may also be called the release bearing.
When should you switch to a performance kit?

Whether youre considering, or in the process of, modifying your 240SX for road racing, drag racing or drifting, its important to fully understand what it is you want to achieve once the performance modifications are completed.

A transmission designed for everyday use would not work for someone looking to drift smoothly into and out of corners. This is because factory components are not designed to be strong enough to handle the extra strain.

Since a large number of Japanese cars, such as the 240SX, have engines that do not have the rear-end torque thats required to enter a drift, drivers must use a technique called kicking, which causes extra wear to the pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel. Since Nissan doesnt produce aftermarket items specifically for racing, these sorts of clutch kits would have to be purchased from another manufacturer.
