Car and Truck Intake Manifold

The intake manifold is a part of a vehicles internal combustion system. It evenly distributes the air/fuel mixture to all the cylinders, affecting the performance of the vehicle. It also functions as a mount for the fuel injectors, if your car has them, or the carburetor if you own a vehicle with an older engine.

What are the results of an intake manifold leak?

One result of leakage is that more air will be sucked into the manifold. This leads to having too much air in the cylinders and the amount of gasoline will decrease. The resulting combustion of air and gas is less efficient. Your car ends up working harder than normal to start up and work. There is a decrease in performance.

Another result of a leakage occurs in car models in which the manifold also serves as a coolant fluid conduit. The leak would happen in the coolant seal, and there would be coolant puddles under the car after its been stationary for a few minutes.

How do you remove the intake manifold?

To remove it, do the following:

  • Remove the air filter and air filter container, paying close attention to where the parts connect so you can easily reconnect them.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to open the hose clamp. Remove the fuel lines and the vacuum lines.
  • Remove the screws that hold the links to the throttle.
  • Loosen the nuts on the four corners of the carburetor (or fuel injector).
  • Use a wrench to loosen the connecting bolts and remove the distributor.
  • Disconnect the upper radiator hose by using a flathead screwdriver to loosen the screws.
  • Remove the manifold by loosening the bolts that connect it to the engine.
Are all intake manifolds the same?

Things to thing about when you buy a new intake manifold:

  • Look at ones that are compatible with your vehicle.
  • If your vehicle has a carburetor, then those intake manifolds come in different designs - single plane, dual plane, tunnel ram, and more. You need to match the intended rpm operating range of your vehicle and the application of your vehicle to the correct style.
  • If your car has a fuel injection system, choose an intake manifold that works with your particular vehicles system.
How do you install a new intake manifold?

Here are the steps to follow when you install the new intake manifold:

  • Clean the engine surface.
  • Check the new manifold for any gasket leaks. Apply gasket sealant on each side of all the gaskets.
  • Insert the manifold into its place next to the engine block. Screw in the bolts to secure it to the engine body.
  • Reinstall all the other parts you had removed before. This includes the air filter, fuel line, vacuum lines, distributor, throttle links, and the upper radiator hose.
