A master cylinder sends pressurized fluid to the calipers when the driver presses the pedal inside of the compact vehicle. These calipers have an internal piston that forces outward to squeeze pads against the rotor, which connects to the wheel of the SUV. This action causes the SUV to slow down in speed or come to a complete stop depending on how hard or how long you press the pedal.

There are three main types of pads for installation in a GMC Terrain braking system. These options include semi-metallic, non-asbestos, and ceramic pads.

• Semi-metallic: Semi-metallic pads are made from metal shavings, including copper, brass, and steel, bonded together with resin. These parts are universal and can be used for all types of driving conditions.
• Non-asbestos: Non-asbestos pads are also referred to as organic. The materials used include rubber, glass, and Kevlar to create the friction surface. These products create minimal dust when braking.
• Ceramic: Ceramic pads are made from hardened ceramic materials blended with copper fibers to make them sturdy and durable.

Fixed calipers mount in a stationary position at each wheel point of the GMC vehicle. A floating caliper sits on top of pins connected to the rotor. These calipers have the freedom to move from side to side along the rotor.

Vented rotors for the GMC Terrain have slits or holes drilled into the surface of the rotor. These openings allow for the gases and heat created when braking to be vented away from the various surrounding braking system components. This aids in the prevention of premature wear on the rotors and pads and less dust collection from braking.
