ATV Master Cylinders for Arctic Cat 500

The Arctic Cat is a 4x4 ATV that can be used for traveling off-road or in the snow, hitching and pulling heavy items, or working on a farm. While it looks and rides differently than the average vehicle, it relies on similar mechanics in order to run effectively. These mechanics need to be maintained just the same for the 4x4 to be kept in a good and safe working condition.

What is a master cylinder?

The master cylinder is just one part of the Arctic Cat braking system that allows the ATV rider to slow down and come to a stop when moving. It consists of pistons that move inside the cylinder that convert non-hydraulic pressure into hydraulic pressure. The pressure that is created dispenses the fluid that is housed in the cylinder to the brake lines in order to continue through the process. It is activated when pressure is applied to the brake pedal lever.

What are the signs of a damaged master cylinder?

It is important, for safety reasons, that the aspects of the braking system are maintained and working properly at all times. Even one damaged or malfunctioning part can cause physical harm to the rider or others around you. After consistent use over time, the seals inside the master cylinder can wear and break down, subsequently causing the brake fluid within it to leak. If you are at all concerned that your brake system is not functioning properly, it is essential that you perform and inspection. Some common signs of a damaged master cylinder include:

  • Abnormal brake pedal behavior: If the pedal lever feels mushy or slowly sinks in when pressure is applied, this can be a sign of a faulty master cylinder. This might mean that the cylinder is not holding enough fluid to create the correct amount of pressure.
  • Contaminated brake fluid: Once the seals break down, the brake fluid can get contaminated. A sign of contamination is if the fluid changes to a dark brown or black color.
  • Check engine light: Newer model ATVs might have sensors inside the master cylinder that recognize when the pressure or fluids are low, meaning that there is a fluid leak. This would cause the check engine warning light to illuminate.
How long should the master cylinder last?

The main reason for master cylinder failure is worn or broken-down seals. There is no time frame for the life of the seals, as use and other conditions are factors in their possible damage. This is why it is important to perform regular inspections.
