While the size of a MacBook Air may not change from one generation to the next, each display is configured for that specific model year or model of Mac. Even though a 13-inch MacBook Air released in 2011 may be the same size as the 2010 or 2012 13-inch MacBook Air, that does not mean you can use a part made for a 2010 model on your 2011 model. You want to be sure you are getting the right replacement for your model of MacBook Air.

While Macs do come with model numbers, they are not the main way in which the company differentiates one MacBook Air model from another. Since the company generally releases only one model of each type of computer or device per year, they generally refer to their devices by the model year in which they were released.

There are two ways to find the model year of your MacBook Air which will tell you which replacement part you need to order:

• Regulatory markings: The actual model number of your 13 or 13.3-inch MacBook Air can be found on the bottom of your MacBook Air near the regulatory markings. With that, you can look up the model year online.
• Product details: If your laptop is usable, you can click the Apple symbol on the top left of your Mac. Click on "About This Mac" and a pop-up window will appear that will give you all the details you need to order a replacement part for your MacBook Pro.

The technical expertise necessary to replace a broken or cracked display will depend on the type of damage. The laptop display is actually two separate parts: the LCD screen and a glass cover that goes over the LCD screen. If the glass is simply cracked, you may merely need to replace the glass, not the LCD itself. If you only need to replace the glass, you may be able to do it yourself.
