What You Need to Know About Replacing Your MacBook Air Screen

Even well-made laptops and portable computers may occasionally need parts replaced or upgraded. If you need to replace the LCD screen on your Apple MacBook Air laptop, here are the answers to come questions you might have.

How do you choose the right screen?

While Apple does use model numbers, they are not the main way in which Apple differentiates one version of a MacBook from another. Since Apple generally releases only one version of each type of computer or device each year, they generally refer to their devices by the year of release. There are two ways to find out which version of MacBook Air you have. The model number can be found on the bottom of your MacBook Air near the regulatory markings. With that number, you can look up the year it was manufactured online. If your laptop is usable, however, you can also follow these steps:

  • Click on the Apple symbol on the top left of your Macs task bar.
  • Click on About This Mac.
  • A pop-up window will appear to give you all the details you need to order replacement parts for your MacBook Air.
Can a display from any same-size version be used?

While the size of a MacBook Air may not change from one generation to the next, each display is specifically configured for that years version. Even though a MacBook Air released in 2012 may have the same size screen as the MacBook Air 11 or Air 13, that does not mean you can swap a part from one model year to that of another. You need to check that the part you are ordering is configured specifically for the version of Air that you own. Similarly, while the MacBook Pro may come in a 13-inch model just like the Air and appear to be very similar, you cannot use a display made for a 2011 MacBook Pro on a 2011 MacBook Air. See the manufacturer site for details.

Does the screen need to be replaced by a professional?

The technical expertise necessary to replace a broken or cracked display on a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air will depend on the type of damage. The unit is composed of two separate parts: the LCD and a glass cover. If the glass is cracked, you may merely need to replace the glass, not the LCD screen itself. In that case, you may consider replacing the part yourself. If the LCD is damaged, however, you may need to replace the entire screen. There are several online tutorials available to help you determine whether you feel you have the expertise necessary to do the repairs yourself. When ordering parts, make sure you know exactly what you are purchasing. Some kits provide only the glass, while others supply the entire LCD unit, which includes the glass. Each screen model may have a slightly different procedure, so refer to owners instructions for proper replacement.
